HEW delays renewal of cancer research contract in Omaha
The HEW blocks a $3.2 million renewal for the Eppley Institute for Cancer Research until a federal audit is completed. The pause follows a GAO preliminary review prompted by Rep. David Obey and affects $237,650 already earmarked to improve the institute's animal breeding facility. Dr. Phillipe Shubik heads the institute and faced scrutiny over industry ties. Since 1968, contracts with the National Cancer Institute total about $20 million, with audit covering 1973 onward.
