ITA KAN Jan 4 While hunting ten miles west of Mountain Lake F J Schnieder found a hole opened by rocks pried apart revealed a hole ten feet wide and one hundred feet deep with a growing ore vein. Residents fear a Spaniard era mine. a fragment shows gold value at the surface.

Eureka California January 4 At 10 oclock this morning no word reached for the missing from the ill fated steamship Walla Walla Coast searchers boats and the US dispatch boat McCullough are at work The dead are conservatively placed at ten with twenty six missing A life boat with seven passengers found safe in a lagoon fifteen miles north of Trinidad survivors on their way back to Trinidad.
Governor Leslie M. Shaw of Iowa met with Secretary Gage for about two hours to discuss Treasury affairs. It is said he will assume charge of the Treasury Department on the 25th instant. He indicated no plans for changes in the current staff.

In Indianapolis on January 4, rioters at the industrial school for girls and women's prison were soaked by a fire hose after a riot began over a kitchen worker’s punishment. Miss Rhodes, the superintendent, kept calm as eight kitchen girls joined the disturbance. The hose drenched the room and the riot ended. the girls were locked in cells and to be kept there until they show repentance.
The Rev. James A Heath was deposed from the ministry and expelled from Calvary Baptist Church in Kansas City after allegations of illegally securing a New York divorce to marry a local woman. Former Castile New York pastor Heath and evidence help from Rev. Charles A Merrill were central to the church action.
LAPORTE Indiana January 4 Instead of a wedding at the home of William Kapplin at Stillwell this county there will be a funeral and the clergyman who was to have officiated at the nuptials of John Hensel aged 67 and Mrs Sophia Harness aged 63 will tomorrow conduct services over the remains of Mr Hensel. On New Years night Hensel celebrated in honor of his approaching nuptials and Thursday morning he was found dead.
In Omaha on January 4 James Adamson’s divorce suit against Annie Adamson collapsed when key witness Mrs. E. Solston fainted in court. The landlady’s testimony had attacked the marriage. after the fainting episode the witness recovered with memory gaps, and the court denied the divorce.
Henry L Bruner of Butler University foresees centuries hence a brain driven future human race with a larger body and many changes. He predicts loss of floating ribs appendix and little toes a taller figure longer limbs and longer life with disease control and shifted sexual balance.
In Crawfordsville Indiana Wille and Mary Daniels ages 5 and 7 were bitten by a four foot rattlesnake that had hidden in a wood stick brought indoors. The snake struck the siblings multiple times with the girl bitten on the leg and the brother on the hand. The serpent was killed and the children were taken to Terre Haute for treatment.
