AYTON OHIO January 2 A local court verdict exonerates D W Eby who beat a mule for stubbornness. The jury found the owner justified in using persuasive power when a mule refuses to move after a firm rebuke and a rawhide strike.
In Evansville Indiana Mrs Phine Paraway and two sons aged 82 and 24 died from gas poisoning late last night from a base net stove. Neighbors heard a man named John give the alarm as he crawled from an injured state and could not recall details. The family struggled to open windows and doors for hours before succumbing.
Senator W Daniel of Virginia plans to resign from the Virginia Constitutional Convention after the holidays. He has been absent for two months due to illness and may leave to join an important committee assignment. Trains 9 and 10 were reported on time at 3 pm today.
J W Bailey writes from Collin County endorsing Arthur P Gorman of Maryland as the Democratic presidential nominee. He argues Gorman can defeat David B Hill at the convention and warns against nominating a candidate who did not support Hill in 186.
In Akron Ohio on January 2 Mrs Herbert Spencer 22 attempted suicide after a quarrel with husband Herbert unknown age. She shaved her hair to mock him then took chloroform morphine and carbolic acid but survived after hours of unconsciousness. The couple from Delaware Ohio had moved to Akron two months ago.
Boston January 2 W Murray Jane was sworn in as governor of Massachusetts for his third term in a ceremony today.
In Shelbyville Indiana a land dispute over a one inch survey line and a foot of ground led to murder. George Scott faced George Sanderfur's son Clarence Sanderfur after an argument on the highway. Scott was struck with a club and died at 5 AM. Sanderfur was jailed. Scott, 40, left a wife and children. both families are prominent in the county.
In Cleveland Ohio Judge Kennedy tells Jos McNamee in Police Court that there are times when death by own action is excusable while McNamee, charged with stealing, had testified against a junk dealer whom he sold stolen iron. He offered no reply and was returned to the workhouse.
Danbury, Conn. Jan 2 John Fitzpatrick a 72 year old fortune holder died of starvation in Croton N Y neighbors found him in a dying condition amid a room with only a bread crust left. He had over 20000 in bank deposits and 85 in gold coins arise from seven bankbooks showing no withdrawals or interest for over ten years. Only two sisters in the Southwest are known relatives.
