New York February reports that nine passenger liners flying U S and other flags are to sail from New York to Europe. Most are American or Dutch owned with three British ships also listed. optimism fades as several vessels head east with passengers aboard.
A cable reported tally shows 59 ships sunk since February 1 under the German blockade. Sixty percent were British, with American and other neutrals among the losses totaling about 116 thousand tons. The Peru lute vessel was torpedoed near Span waters, and Lloyds notes the British steamer Holl (Holmide) of 2682 tons foundered with crew rescued.
France has formally granted safe passage through the allied blockade for Count von Bernstorff and his staff. Britain is expected to grant similar safe passage, and word of Britain's action arrived later at the State Department.
The message reports escalating tension between the United States and Germany as the submarine campaign intensifies. Fi ne.hihuahua reports say the civilian police chief in El Valle was executed after helping expeditionary American troops. A rancher local to the area stated Villa forces under Onevedo arrested the chief and killed him shortly after the American troops departed.
Six crewmen of the British ship Dauntless were rescued after its torpedoing by a German submarine. Two men were wounded and the captain seriously injured. The Ha va sgency announced today.
A 13 year old girl Alice Barkon of Ord Nebraska was assaulted and strangled in her home five miles north of Ord. A ladder was used to enter the window while her 7 year old sister slept. Tracks in a stolen car led toward Ord and alarms were sounded by telephone as suspects fled, abandoning the vehicle.
Ten tank steamers and 1 000 000 barrels of fuel oil were offered to the government in case of war by the Mexican Petroleum Company through BK L Doheny its president who also offered his private yacht.
Colorado Governor Gunter issued a statement to calm German residents amid war fears. He pledged that in case of war both state and United States governments will protect all Germans and their property resident in Colorado.
London report says an American negro fireman on the Torino George Washington was killed when the 2702 ton vessel was sunk by a submarine. Crew landed. Calvin Bay of Utah survived. President Wilson ordered prompt gathering of facts and kept in touch with officials as inquiries continued.
Philadelphia report says the German American National Alliance meeting with delegates from 28 states endorses Wilson’s actions against Germany and pledges to form German American regiments if war comes. It notes 3,000,000 members and plans to fund the American Red Cross in wartime.
London reports German demands to free Count Von Bernsorff and other German ships crew in U S ports before Americans in Germany may depart. Ambassador Gerard’s telegrams confirm Americans in Germany including Yarrowdale captives are detained as hostages and no code telegrams are allowed.
Washington reports that Ambassador Gerard and American consuls, plus sailors from the prize ship Yarrowdale, are detained in Germany awaiting assurances on safe departure of Count Von Bernstorf and German officials. About 150 Americans and twenty-two consulates across Germany, Belgium, and Warsaw are affected as authorities seek confirmation and clarity.
Dispatches report Germany holds Mr Gerard and many Americans as hostages for the safe return of Count Von Bernstorff. London papers say Allies may permit a safe conduct for Von Bernstorff, but unlikely for numerous Germans.
Copenhagen reports no Americans have been seized in Germany since diplomatic ties were strained. Reginald Foster, Rockefeller Foundation agent in Germany, was expected to arrive Monday night and had reserved accommodations by telegraph, but had not reached Copenhagen by late last night and no further word was received.
The Netherlands government, via the American legation in The Hague, declines President Wilsons suggestion to break off diplomatic relations with Germany. The confidential dispatches from The Hague reached Washington today.
Berlin via London reports the German foreign office asked James W. Gerard the American ambassador to sign a proposal reaffirming the 1977 and 1812 treaties. Gerard referred officials to Spanish and Swiss intermediaries for handling.
