In Washington the president spoke to Congress outlining Germany’s submarine policy and pledging to seek authority to take necessary measures to protect U S ships and citizens. Diplomats from South America and neutrals attended as Wilson warned Germany would violate international law and liberty and justice.
The American liner Housatonic was sunk by a German submarine near the Scilly Islands off Lands End England. The loss occurred as tensions rise in the Atlantic theater with warnings issued to shipping.
A Philadelphia naval yard report says a machinist mate opened sea cocks to sink the torpedo boat Jacob Jones. While towed to dock, the vessel took on water, two feet in the hold, and the chief machinist’s mate was arrested.
News from New York reports the postponement of the steamer St Louis while Germany broke diplomatic ties. Adriatic sails to Liverpool with passengers amid cheers. other liners received clearance papers for European ports. In Washington, Navy forbids disclosure of war vessel movements and studies commandeering private plants for navy needs. Governors back President Wilson as US prepares military measures for transatlantic sailings.
In Derdy, Feb 3, Attorney General Sir Frederick Smith opened the case against four defendants led by Mrs. Alice Wheeldon and her daughters. He alleged plots to murder the Premier and Lloyd George by poisoned darts, curare, and other devices, with schemes to poison drinking milk authorities and strike at political leaders.
Cromwell Iowa Feb 3 Four known dead and fifty injured with one likely fatally hurt after train No 12 Chicago Burlington and Quincy struck a broken rail 300 yards east of Cromwell station, left the track and plunged down a sixty foot embankment into a frozen ditch. Passengers in night clothes suffered cuts and bruises while clustered by the wreckage in subzero temperatures. Continued on page eight.
Washington reports Senator Thomas introduces an amendment to the revenue bill proposing 500 million in non interest bearing treasury notes to fund naval and military preparedness. The notes would be payable to munition suppliers and redeemable in 1935.
