Chicago Aug. 12 reports say Morris Swift and Armour form a merged Big Three with New York and Boston millionaires planning a major contest on La Salle street. Vanderbilts own the Union Stock Yards in Chicago and Kansas City yard owners fear profit drops or relocation to cheaper tracts.
St Louis and Washington scientists plan to dig for specimens in northern Arizona and ship them to the World’s Fair. Arizona’s petrified forests will also be collected for display alongside a new mineral cabinet by Dr. G H Bailey of Yuma. The cabinet features 156 subdivisions and a rock frame in mineral colors.
The Twelfth Census Division of Agriculture reports on irrigation growth in arid States. It notes 108,218 irrigators in 1898 89 with 5,944,418 acres in crops and 1,595,183 in pasture. Total ditch length 44,149 miles, average farm irrigated area 71 acres, value per acre 42.53 dollars. Arizona shows large gains, and Congress plans further irrigation statistics for 1902.
The German Lloyd steamship Kaiser Wilhelm II was launched today at the Vulcan shipyard with Emperor William present. The liner, designed to be the world’s largest and fastest, measures 707 feet in length with 19,500 tons displacement and space for five passengers.
