The nation awoke to news that President Harding lay dead from a gunman’s blow as officials and citizens processed the loss. Postmaster General Walter Brown and cabinet members were named in condolence dispatches while Vice President Coolidge prepared to assume duties.
Five attending doctors released a joint statement saying President Warren G. Harding died from apoplexy or a rupture of a blood vessel in the axis of the brain near the respiratory center. They noted the attack could have occurred at any time and commented on the moment of his last words and the optimistic bulletin before his death.
