Education as national reform not party driven drive

In a long letter to the editor, Publius decries party vendetta over education. He argues for a universal system teaching facts and civic duties, warns against sectarian or partisan control, and says true schooling begins with parents and nature before books. He urges a future-oriented program to mold educated citizens rather than private self interest.

Paris Assizes Drama Over Lost Mother and Son Encounter

At the Paris Assizes cook Rousel was sentenced to life for robbing and drowning his mistress. A dramatic court scene followed a surprise mother and son reunion, witnessed with mixed emotion as judges sought to calm the audience. The Post notes nuances of French trial gravity and contrasts with local perceptions.

Mutiny and Massacre Aboard the Fanny Off Luconia

Reports describe a brutal mutiny on the British ship Fanny under Captain M Kay leaving Chemuroo Bay for Lintin on August 17, 1836. Two Manila men plotted to kill the captain and officers, killing the Europeans, seizing the vessel, and plundering near the north coast of Laconia. Lascars and Chinese language barriers left some prisoners, while the mutineers fled with gold and silver bars stamped with Chinese marks. Captain Kay, famed for years at sea, had about 50,000 in personal wealth aboard, and 100,000 in specie was on the ship. The mutineers’ fate remains unclear as authorities investigate. Also noted are distress warrants and tithe-related proceedings at Brooke, with a lively Oakham sale scene and impresario-like magistrates overseeing the auctions.
