Curious Case of Silk Seizure and Offi cer Donne
In August 1831 Mr Donne an officer of the Customs oversaw three silk seizures from a boat to premises in street. Two assistants were sent to seize at other warehouses while he took the third. They received no prize share but were promised liberal pay. A large fine was paid into customs funds but the distribution in 1833 gave each officer 14 0972 14s 0d instead of the half to Donne. The Board later altered this claiming a mistake though Donne contends the Silk Act allows one half to officers. Donne’s due share is 2463 93 but Treasury petitions fail. He spent 100 in pursuit and rejected 15000 offer to settle. Bribery cases follow as seizures depend on Donne’s treatment. Copy of Petition lies at the Treasury.
