Purification of Sea Water Experiment on Ship
An on board test of Mr Wells new sea water purification apparatus succeeded off Westminster bridge. The steam kitchen unit, about 4 ft 6 in by 4 ft, can cook for 70 to 80 people and uses roughly 2 cwt of coal in 12 hours. Distilled water is produced at a quart per minute and cooled by an outside condensing pipe. Water is drinkable after filtration or brief exposure. it bears a slight aroma until filtered. Advantages include low fuel use, reliable palatable water, and larger freight space. A copper French king ordered rival device is noted for comparison.
