In the Vice-Chancellor's Court Count Peronco Lararte Mc Knight moved for a special injunction to stop piracy of the drama Malek Adel. The plaintiff, author of an Italian poem later dramatised into an opera with music by Signor Costa, sought to halt sale of pirated Italian libretto and English translation. His Honour granted the injunction to protect the plaintiff's copyright.
In a writ of error the Court of King's Bench ruled that Bourne and the two others, tried at the Court of Quarter Sessions for burglary, were wrongly sentenced and must be discharged. The court refused to substitute a new judgment and discharged the prisoners, citing King v. Ellis.
In Evans v Chester thej udgment against Mary Ann Chester now Sutton led to capia ad satisfaciendum. She was in custody on an affidavit claiming no marriage settlement but did not deny separate property. Dowling and counsel argued execution after marriage requires no separate property. Baron Parke agreed the wife may not be taken in execution after marriage without separate property. rule discharged with costs.
In a consistory court before Dr Washington, Coch rane seeks conjugal rights repuization but the petitioner wife fails to appear and contempt is rejected after a letter from Mr Cochrane. In Broere v Broere, a divorce on adultery is heard with alimony pendente life debated. the promoter is insolvent, dependent on charity, and requests support while proceedings continue. The judge notes lack of precedent for alimony in insolvent cases.
A black man born in Saint Kitts faced the Lord Mayor on a charge of deserting wife and child. He claimed to be a Hamburgh steamer cook and shared his views on race and marriage as the couple’s argument unfolded. The court ordered security for the wife’s support and considered sending him to Hamburgh, with an agreement that he avoid other women and his wife would be silent or have her tongue shortened.
At the Queen-Square office a case by the Watermen's Company against the London and Westminster Steam-boat Company sought to halt short river runs between Westminster and London bridges. Magistrates, led by Barrell, found the word craft broad enough to cover steam craft, levying a 10 percent penalty on the defendant. Murphy warned of an appeal to the Middlesex Sessions. The decision pleased many watermen in attendance.
A Croydon man J Miller aged 52 died by hanging in a room at Eastey's Hotel after selecting a top floor bed. Evidence shows he was despondent and mentally distressed for months. Witnesses note he called a brother and planned to see a Treasury sibling. Verdict: died by hanging in a state of temporary insanity.
