Box Car Robbers Employ New Trick On Express Trains
A gang of freight car thieves working from East St. Louis use a novel method by stowing themselves in cars and fleeing with goods to waiting wagons at Belt Line near Troy. Last Saturday’s eastbound No. 78 dropped loot including dry goods, carpets, and rugs consigned to an eastern firm from a St. Louis house. Detectives traced the scene to a wagon setup and adjoining belt line, with no further clues about the robbers, who are believed to be familiar with night trains and tied to lead employees. The thefts disrupt shipments and baffling railroad police.
