The tobacco monopoly yielded the Austrian government a net profit of 27 million dollars in 1902. It employed 40,445 people, with 35,284 women. there were 30 factories. Average weekly wages were 2.80 dollars for men and 2.08 dollars for women.

Two Italian laborers and a railroad worker were killed in a Riverside Illinois fight when robbers forced entry to a section house near the Illinois Central line. The robbers fled after taking hidden money, leaving another injured.

A man entered George Goyen's saloon at Steward, forced a hold up, and shot Goyen above the heart after a refusal. He fled to Dixon jail, claiming Chicago origins. Three men were reportedly implicated in the attempted robbery.
George Wylie of Taylorville died on an Illinois Central train near Bloomington while returning home from North Dakota. A participant in the Rosebud land drawings earlier, he had fallen ill in North Dakota. His brother in law, also of Taylorville, had gone to bring him home. death occurred about one hundred miles from his destination.
The Decatur furniture factory once closed by the furniture trust has been leased by a chair making concern that operated at Joliet penitentiary using prison labor. The plant will be reopened and start with 300 workers.
Adjutant General Scott reports honorably discharged soldiers Fred Spires and John B. Boden of Company C 4th Infantry Carbondale. Dishonorably discharged are Abram C. Miller C F Babb George Tenny C K Kalebaugh and W H McGraw of Company G 6th Infantry Dixon.
The city owned Ben ton electric lighting plant was destroyed by fire with an estimated loss near 87 000 and 1200 in insurance. The city will be without lights until a new plant is built. work has begun and is expected to take about sixty days to complete and install machinery.
The St Clair county board of supervisors debated the best method to stamp out smallpox in the county. A proposal to erect a permanent pesthouse was referred to a committee for further consideration.
A Burmah cablegram announces the death of Mrs Wallace St John, daughter of A H Seley of Centralia. Her husband is a professor in a large English college at Burmah.

A man near Quincy accidentally shot and killed his ten year old son Frederick during a rabbit hunting trip. Henry Hestlin was handling the firearm when the fatal incident occurred, the boy died instantly from a stomach wound.
St. Petersburg dispatch reports Russian forces firmly guarding the road to Fushan and Bent- Siaputze as rumors of Gen Kuroki crossing the Hun river prove false. Analysts note that Japanese occupation of Fushun would pressure a Mukden evacuation, while casualty lists show 405 killed or wounded among Russian officers, including six generals and 39 field officers, with 13 missing.

The move follows local opposition to non union telegraph operators amid the recent telegraphers strike, with residents reportedly refusing to receive the railroad’s staff as boarders and leaving not a shingle atop the depot.

Fire at the Rock Island elevator in St Joseph destroys the 75000 bushel facility owned by South Park Elevator Co. Losses hit 25000 on the building and 35000 on the train with 20000 insurance on the building and 40000 on grain. Five railroad box cars burned, total loss about 6000. The facility contained 40000 bushels of wheat at the time.
