Dr Frederick Albert Cook of Brooklyn gained international fame for Arctic exploration claiming to reach the pole. The private expedition began July 1907 funded by Cook and J B Bradley who chartered the ship. Bradley returned to hunt big game, while Cook pressed on amid dissension among Peary supporters who accused him of stealing a march on the naval expedition.
