Herbert L. Kessinger, a Donnelson constable for Grisham township, was shot to death by Frank Sullavish after Kessinger knocked to serve papers. Sullavish fired through a closed door wounding Kessinger, then shot him again and fled into timber as a posse pursued with bloodhounds from Decatur.
In Palu Mexico 72 miners were killed by a Friday night explosion. Most victims were Mexican and Japanese. Authorities fear no bodies will be recovered alive for 44 more hours. Smuggling in common dynamite is suspected as the cause, rather than company safety powder.
New York reports four killed and almost a score injured in the sixth Vanderbilt cup race on Long Island. Harry Grant won the cup driving a 120 horsepower Alco. The finish brought no cheer as crowds heard of deaths and injuries amid ambulance bells.
London reports King Manuel and President-elect de Fonseca aboard the Brazilian warship Sao Paulo amid a Lisbon revolution. Telegraph lines are cut as warships bombard the royal palace near the Tagus. The dispatch claims Manuel and de Fonseca are aboard and sought by authorities.
In Weisbaden Evno Azeff revolutionist and police spy was assassinated. Novoe Vremya reports the sensational act as a success against the greatest traitor in Russian history. Azeff, once head of fighting revolutionists, organized notable crimes including the planned assassinations of Grand Duke Sergius and Father Gapon, while secretly serving as a police-paid agent.
Beverly Massachusetts November 20 is set for Justice William H Moody to resign from the supreme court. Moody told President Taft in early summer he would retire this fall if illness prevented him from resuming his seat. He suffers rheumatism and does not expect to be able to participate before the Standard Old and tobacco trust cases are reargued.
Illinois Supreme Court granted a stay of execution in the murder case of Dr. Haldane Clemingson. Under the stay the physician cannot be sent to prison until the high court rules on the lower court verdict. Clemingson’s appeal was filed some time ago.
In Seattle Washington the steamer City of Seattle from Skagway was robbed of unknown gold as mail pouches were slit open. Passengers were searched and allowed off one by one at the pier. Two men have been arrested.
Jefferson City state funds receive interest payments from multiple depositors for September totaling 5281 62 with payments listed from National Bank of Commerce Kansas City Exchange Bank Jefferson City First National Bank of Jefferson City German American Bank St Louis and Mississippi Valley Trust St Louis bringing the month’s total to 5281 62.
The Los Angeles Times plant at First and Broadway blew up just after 1 30 a m sending a fire through the building and killing from 15 to 20 with many more injured. Investigators consider a gas leak and the blast may have been linked to a long running labor conflict. The paper will continue publishing as crews assess the damage and a duplicate plant was prepared for emergencies.
New York report states Standard Oil via J I C Clarke announces a global campaign to boost refined oil consumption by lowering prices. It notes US prices are at a multi year low and that U S consumption is rising, with abroad policy now active. The company began in the US with cuts, tanks from 6 to 5 cents and refinery barrel rates from 9 to 8 cents per gallon.
At least sixty people were injured, many seriously, when a reviewing stand for the Priests of Pallas parade collapsed at the northeast corner of Eleventh street and Troost avenue in Kansas City. The stand was 50 feet long by 16 feet deep and crowded to capacity, with rear low ground causing those in front to be thrown back onto others.

Ellis Island records show that of 62 727 immigrants who arrived here on July 12 895 or about 25 percent are illiterates. Illiteracy is no bar to an immigrant so long as he appears physically able to care for himself. Only 1127 persons who sought to enter the country were barred at this port last month.
