Henry Robinson, motorman for the Belleville electric railway, escaped serious harm when his unoccupied car was struck by an Illinois Central switch engine near Walnut Hill cemetery. The engine swung a siding to take a string of loaded cars from Belleville Brick Co, wrecking the car and derailing the engine tender. Witnesses fault the switch engine crew for the accident.
Merchants league and board of trade members in Cairo heard Col J L Vance of Columbus Ohio, president of the Ohio Valley Improvement association, outline a dam system to be asked of Congress for a navigable Ohio river year round. Vance said a complete survey has never been done and engineers are now at work.
Fred Whitcamp Sr. died at St Marys Infirmary after being assaulted by Charley Bradley who remains jailed on murder charges. Bradley attacked over a feud involving a white man said to have troubled the negro. Whitcamp never regained consciousness.
A $20,000 blaze starting in the Arlington hotel spread to the Hudson house the Burriss building and the old White row. Guests crowded the hotels as a party of Pittsburg capitalists arrived to inspect the coal fields. Everyone escaped safely though some were in scant attire.
Fire at Chillicothe destroyed an entire business block and threatened the white business section. Engines were sent from Peoria by special trains, and the blaze was finally controlled. The loss cannot be accurately estimated at present, but it is heavy.
At a meeting in Quincy, local insurance agents unanimously decided to ignore a company order to raise rates by 10 to 20 percent in the business district. They warn the rate hike will be withdrawn only if their firms replace current agents.

Payne rose from private business to high trust and served in the nation’s high councils. He is mourned as a principled and beloved public servant.
Captain D Baccari, sent by Italy to study settlement in the Congo, reports he was poisoned upon arrival by local officials and narrowly avoided death by treating himself as a doctor. He says the governor general attempted to have him confined as a lunatic and he filed suit before departing.
Hippolyte Francois of Nantes reports his airship for the World’s Fair aeronautic contest ruined in transit from New York to St. Louis. Water and damp weather soaked the silk bag, causing rot. the bag tore in several places during unloading, making ascent unsafe.
New York October 6 The Manhattan club hosted the first public reception for Judge Alton B Parker since his presidential nomination. The crowded clubhouse filled to capacity as Parker and Democratic nominee for New York governor D Cady Herrick stood on the platform beside the reception committee. Parker did not speak, but watched the throng with shaking hands among the hundreds pressing around him.
A morning bulletin from Walmer Castle reports Lady Curzon had a quiet night and her condition is somewhat better than yesterday. The statement reflects a modest improvement in her health following prior concerns.
President Roosevelt formally names Robert J. Wynne, First Assistant Postmaster General, as acting postmaster general. Wynne’s designation follows the administration’s plan to fill the role in the interim.
