Farmers Institute in Troy prepares for big event
Madison County Farmers Institute readies its twelfth annual meeting in Troy for November 16 and 17 at Rieder's opera house. Business Men's Association coordinates extensive preparations and a large raffle list with 27 contests and varied premiums donated by local merchants and citizens.

Madison county fair exhibitors rules and prizes
Rules limit entries to Madison county farm and kitchen products raised or made by exhibitors. No person may enter more than one entry per variety. Entries close at 6 p m Tuesday November 15 with exhibits in place by 9 a m Wednesday 16. Prize money totaling 21 25 was donated by Troy businessmen and citizens with committees appointed by the Business Men's Association. A full two day program will be printed in the next issue of The Cact.

Special Crop Bulletin From Springfield District
The bulletin notes killing frosts from October 26 to 28 across much of the state with normal monthly temperatures and deficient rainfall. Corn is largely safe before frosts, much husking done, and a wind storm on October 20-21 caused damage. Wheat is satisfactory though late sown, rye thrifty, pastures needing rain in central and southern districts, livestock doing well, potato output above average, and apples largely gathered with northern good yields and southern light inferior yields.

Vandalia Line Leaves Receivership for New Trust
The Vandalia Line, long under Volney T. Malott as receiver, passed from receivership at midnight October 31. The T. H. & I. and leased lines, St. L. V. & T. H., Perre Haute & Peoria, Terre Haute & Logana perce and Logansport & Toledo Railways are to be managed by Malott as trustee until absorption by the Pennsylvania system. A stockholders meeting set for Greenville on December 15 aims to finalize the merger and rename the combined entity Vandalia Railroad Co.

County court reports disposed cases in petty theft and liquor
Since last report the county court disposed four liquor cases and several larceny matters. Peter Stemmer pleaded guilty to four counts of selling liquor with a fine of 80 dollars plus costs. John Nic bond forfeited on selling liquor. Robert Gibner pled guilty to petit larceny and received 30 days in jail and 35 dollars fine. Frederick Black Harry Stetson and Silas Fargo pled guilty to petit larceny with jail at two days and fines of 5 dollars each plus one third costs. Henry Ameling and others faced three larceny cases. Ameling pled guilty, jailed one day and fined 1 dollar in each case with one third costs. jail sentence stayed on good behavior.
