President Spivey Addresses Southern Illinois Newspaper Association
President Spivey discusses choosing a focus for the address and urges stronger organization and cooperation among Southern Illinois publishers. He highlights the value of conferences to share ideas, argues for fair pricing and businesslike conduct, and calls for regional organization and a legislative committee to support the trade.
History of Organization of Southern Illinois Editorial Association
The Southern Illinois Editorial Association began in Centralia in June 1909 with expanded territorial limits to include all places on and south of the Big Four main line. Officers named were President W. J. Seil and others, a large executive committee, and later finance and program groups. The first two days included a Peoria trip, 50 editors joined, boosting membership. The Chester 1910 annual meeting drew over 150 attendees with a welcome by Gen. and Mrs. J. B. Smith. New members continued after Mt. Carmel, totaling about 100 editors. The slogan aims to make the next meeting the best, Mt. Carmel outdid Chester last year, and annual steg outings became tradition. In 1910 the editors visited Springfield for a banquet at the St Nicholas hotel, and Champaign in November with W. B. McKinley of the Illinois Traction System. The association grew into a leading regional press group, valued for hospitality and business discipline, with major Illinois cities recognizing its worth and rivaling for annual meetings.
