Veto on Parole Law Bill Suppresses Senate Action
Gov Deneen vetoes Senate Bill 48 on constitutional grounds after a Monday session in which both chambers met. The bill sought to allow juries or judges to fix maximum terms under the indeterminate sentence law, but Attorney General Stead’s opinion argued the measure was broader than the act and would change punishment. Gov Deneen also signed three bills including emergency and hospital appropriations and raised township insurance limits. Chicago charter consolidation bill No 2 failed in the senate 16 to 17, Curtis planning to seek reconsideration.
