Balloon Viking Here Causes Narrow Fatal Landing in Kentucky
The balloon Viking crewman A Forbes and partner J C Yates faced a perilous descent near Center Metcalf County Kentucky after a night aloft from Quincy. A hard jerk of the rip cord caused rapid loss of ballast and provisions as they drifted southward then collapsed to the farmstead where Forbes recovered and Yates remained seriously injured. The craft, an 80 000 cubic foot new balloon built for Forbes, cost 5000 dollars and is said to be a top example of balloon craft.
