Mrs Ham Cox of Murphysboro was killed by Hank Cleland, who fired two shots at her in the dark after thieves had invaded Prof E H Rogers chicken house nearby. A coroner's jury exonerated Cleland.
Directors of Montgomery school adopt a novel contract with new teacher Ethal Eaton promising she will not consider marriage during her term. The measure aims to prevent annual resignations that have plagued the school for years.
Ada Glubough Logue died May 1, 1904, after marrying Michael Logue on April 19, 1903. The infant son died hours earlier. Funeral held at Mount Moriah church near St Elmo. Born February 9, 1890, she was a wife and mother at a very young age.
The 65 year old minister of the German Methodist church in San Jose California died suddenly in Granite City at the home of his sons Walter and Edward Saegesser. He had just arrived from San Jose and was being welcomed when he collapsed and died.
John Fullerton a noted Girard Illinois resident and bartender was killed in a dispute over making change when Hines Sutphin a coal miner drew a revolver and shot him three times. Sutphin was jailed in Carlinville.
Wenona city council raises dramshop license to 750 dollars a year. Liquor dealers refuse to pay, sign an agreement not to buy licenses at that rate. All dramshops are closed amid the dispute.
A collision on the Big Four at Pana caused two oil tanks to rupture, spilling 10,000 gallons of oil. Cellars filled and residents carried away oil in buckets while traffic was stalled for a period.
Mrs. Walter Burnett, a young married woman, is held to await the grand jury after she shot and killed Samuel McCall, a prominent Vienna merchant. She refuses to discuss the tragedy.

As the crowd dispersed from Kinsley’s in Chicago two men with revolvers held up the cashier and fled after taking $1000 in receipts.
A massive explosion at Big Muddy Coal and Iron Co. shaft in Herrin Illinois killed five workers outright and injured twenty others, with five more seriously hurt. Six kegs of powder were staged for morning distribution when an electrical switch likely triggered the blast. John Miller supervised the explosive delivery. the accident prompted a coroner's inquest in Herrin begun yesterday and to continue today.
Denver May 12 A Sherman Bell order calls the First regiment Colorado National Guard into service for target practice. About 1 100 men will mobilize at the rifle range west of Denver with headquarters at Coliseum hall. They will assemble May 16. Bell says there is no intent to gather near Denver beyond practice but acknowledges the troops could be used to prevent fraud at the May 17 city election.
Springfield May 12 The UI nois commission to the Louisiana Purchase exposition arranged details for the dedication of the Illinois building on May 27 Mrs Yates wife of Gov Yates will host and Gov Yates will speak The First Second and Seventh regiments of infantry Illinois national guards will attend and participate in the exercises.
A Sherman jury awarded actor Louis James 10000 dollars against the Oriental Hotel Association of Dallas for libel. The suit claimed telegrams to James and his wife requesting their return and pillow slips alleged missing from the hotel. James sought 10000 dollars actual damages and 10000 exemplary damages.
May 12. The bakers strike at Seitled, Norfolk, Va, ended Wednesday night as the Wester bakers signed the scale, resolving the labor dispute after tense negotiations.
