Officials report that many women and children survived the Mount Dajo assault after weeks of shell and rifle fire. Gov Scealt delayed action six months while outlaws resisted surrender, but Gen Wood and Moro leaders sought to aid civilians and clear the fortress against relentless defense.
Dr Herman Feist was arrested in Nashville on suspicion of murdering Rosa Mangrum whose body was found in the Ohio River near Cairo six weeks earlier. Mangrum, wife of a barber, left Nashville December 14 for a visit to St Louis. Authorities cite circumstantial evidence and a $10,000 bond was set for Feist pending grand jury action.
Milwaukee report says the passenger steamer Atlanta of the Goodrich line burned to the water’s edge ten miles north of Port Washington on Sunday afternoon. Port Washington fishermen the Smith brothers and tug Kessler rushed to rescue 65 passengers and crew who had taken lifeboats. all were saved and transferred to the steamer Georgia, north-bound except for one passenger, who was crowned.
A night fire in the Altman building at Eleventh and Walnut, started in a china kiln, suffocated 82 year old corset maker Miss Agnes Inman who had moved from St Louis three months earlier. Five other women were overcome by smoke on the fifth through fourth floors but were revived by firemen. Little is known of Inman by her employer.
A massive avalanche near Mount Sneffels south of Ouray wrecked the Camp Bird mine mill tram house boarding house and reading room. William Cressey is dead with feared additional fatalities. Dozens injured and property loss estimated at 400000 to 500000 dollars. The bunk house and Cox residence narrowly escaped. About 250 workers were inside the wrecked building. The slide largely spared the assay shops and offices.
Chicago report says charges of extensive forgery threaten after George Paradis, ex employee of the Walsh National Bank, claims his signature on memorandum notes totaling $600,000 is false. Paradis, a civil engineer who surveyed the banker’s Indiana properties, now teaches at the Amor Institute.
Cincinnati reports the death of Johann Most the famed anarchist from erysipelas. He had been ill at Adolph Kraus's home while on a lecture tour and driven from Philadelphia to Cincinnati. He leaves a widow and two sons aged 12 and 10. Most served terms on Blackwell's Island after arrests for inflammatory utterances and was often slated to speak with Emma Goldman.
In Moscow the Credit Muatuans bank on Hinka Street was robbed at dusk by 20 masked men who entered quietly as guards were bound. They used revolvers, opened the burglar-proof safe, seized gold silver and notes totaling 432,500, and disappeared without a trace, prompting belief the key lies inside the bank.
Washington officials report the U S supreme court may study punishing mob participants who seized Ed Johnson from the Chattanooga jail. Johnson, a Black man, was slated for execution Tuesday but stayed by a supreme court order issued Monday. The justice department also weighs steps. The court is not in session for about two weeks.
Mrs Theodore Roosevelt and her children Archie Quentin Ethel and possibly Kermit will leave Washington late next week for Florida then board the converted yacht Mayflower for a ten to fourteen day cruise to the West Indies. They will visit Cuba and Porto Rico stopping at Havana and San Juan before returning.
In Springfield Missouri a man named Murphy from Vinita Indian Territory was shot and killed Monday afternoon by Officer John Wilberry as Murphy resisted arrest. His companion Curtis Bluffs of Illinois was captured after a fierce struggle and held for investigation. Authorities mistook them for Wickliffe outlaws and found two other revolvers in their lodging. Curtis, about 44, claimed they were land seekers.
General John W. Thayer a civil war veteran and former U S senator governor of Nebraska died after an illness. He served as U S senator from 1867 to 1871 and was territorial governor of Wyoming in 1875 and Nebraska governor starting in 1887. Known as an Indian fighter in territorial days, Thayer was 86. He remained active until a month before his death.

Indianapolis Gov Hanly's special investigating committee reports two former state auditors owe the state sums for illegally retained fees. J O Henderson, auditor 1891–95, owes 91962.85 and A C Daly, 1895–98, owes 23667.74. The governor sent the report to the attorney general to file suit for collection.
Washington reports a Bureau of Plant Industry breakthrough after years of tests. New cotton breeds, bred from native upland varieties, yield fibers longer by about half to three quarters of an inch and are ready for next season planting. The bureau says the new seeds could nearly double crop value where used.
In Haverhill Massachusetts the manual training school building burned down on Monday and the fire spread to the Whittier annex of the high school. Many children were injured from jumping and escaping down stairways but no fatalities were reported. The blaze also damaged nearby houses.
In event of an outbreak Winnipeg detachments of mounted police are held in readiness at Calgary MacLeod and Lethbridge as a safeguard for any incidents. Miners on strike in Lethridge coal mines are said to carry dynamite sticks in pockets and issue threatening letters to managers.
Tokio dispatch reports Taihoku that the Formosa quake grew worse than first feared. In Kagi prefecture 1,400 houses were destroyed, 1,014 people were killed, and 695 injured.
