Mine No 2 Sets World Coal Output Record at Gillespie

Powder mill blast at East Alton kills man
A blast at the Equitable Powder Company slasing mill in East Alton on Wednesday evening at 620 caused one death and extensive property damage. The shock wave was felt in Troy, about twenty miles away, with surrounding structures damaged.

Horse Tail Clippers Arrest In East St Louis
Six men named David Mishata E M Pratt Edward Buchanan Clece Floward Wm Taylor and George Bayage were arrested last Friday in East St Louis on charges tied to clipping the tails of more than a hundred horses at the National Stock Yards. Bail of 300 each posted for the first three. The group had operated across St Clair Madison Maconpin and Montgomery counties for six months before being deterred by vigilant farmers and pursuing horse thieves societies. Horse hair fetched good prices, making the crime seemingly profitable until now.

Young man dies suddenly near Edwardsville
Relatives in Troy learned yesterday of the death of Wim Stolte at 11 o'clock at his sister Mrs Louis Spitze’s home near Edwardsville. He was about 24, the son of William Stolte, and had married Esther Niemeier in Troy last October. The couple had since resided in Leelaire. He had suffered neuralgia for six weeks and was under a doctor’s care. Funeral plans were not yet known. the service likely Sunday. Also noted: Vandalia Line station agents met at Highland with G L Elliott and E F Sour of St Louis speaking on harmony. Louis Riesi of Collinsville, father of Leo Rissi, died of pneumonia at 70.
