In Tahlequah Oklahoma Thomas and John Wycliffe were acquitted of murdering deputy U S marshal Isaac Gilstrap in 1906 after a federal pursuit cost about 5000 dollars. The defense offered no witnesses and the state failed to prove the Wycliffes participated in the ambush beyond reasonable doubt.
Washington D C The contest over the Charleston customs collector seat ended with President Taft appointing Edward S Durant Jr a white man. The sole objection to Crum a Negro was thus overcome and Durant’s nomination is expected to be confirmed after a period of executive session while other nominations were promptly acted upon. Crum had long battled for the position with Omun’s nomination pending since January 5 1908.
Washington reports that within a week after Congress adjourns the special tariff session the water ways commission will begin a tour from Minneapolis to the gulf to inspect the Mississippi and neighboring rivers Missouri Tennessee and Ohio. A broader study of continental waterways is planned for this fall. The Mississippi study is described as highly comprehensive.
Wright brothers plan a June return to Dayton for a reception of national note. President Taft, the secretary of war, the secretary of the navy, and Governor Harmon expected to attend. The aviators promise to provide an exhibit of flight.
President Taft told Congress in a brief special message that tariff laws enacted twelve years ago no longer meet conditions and that faster revision is needed to raise more revenue. He warned the deficit could hit 100 million by July 1 and urged passage of a new tariff bill with a proper balance of thorough consideration and speed.
Salvatore Randazzio confessed guilt before execution and sent four letters to his family in Sicily. He murdered his cousin Pietro Randazzio in Cattaraugus county in January 1908 as authorities prepared his fatal chair. Also reported is a big Oklahoma horse trained at Fort Reno for President Taft, to be shipped to Washington soon.
