Jury and court actions wrap up in Madison County

The Madison County Circuit Court finished its May term with adjournment on Thursday last week. The grand jury reported, jail inspections noted food conditions, and several criminal cases were bail-bonded. Names include Harry Perth alias Ed, Charles Clowers, A B Gibson, Alonzo Hogan, Harry Holan, Sam Matthias, Robert Ketchel, Fred Reiske, and others facing charges from forgery to burglary and larceny with varied bail amounts. civil actions involve Standard-Tilton Mills, City of Collinsville appeals, foreclosures, and damages.

National Good Roads advocates split log drag plan

The National Good Roads Association of Illinois plans to meet at Vandalia next Thursday June 20 with about one thousand delegates and several Illinois legislators attending. The group promotes making the old National road part of a proposed ocean to ocean highway through Illinois and urges newspapers in seven counties to boost the project. It also promotes using split log drags to improve roads and explains Iowa law penalties for not dragging after a rain.

Hogan Indicted for Murder in Collinsville Case

Madison county grand jury indicted Alonzo Horan of Collinsville for murder after he struck Ur. KE. M. Herrin with a clothes pole causing fatal injuries. Hogan ordered livid without bail pending circuit court trial. Wim. H. Ostle, Hogan’s brother in law, testifies and will be a principal state witness.

Madison County Board of Review Holds First Meeting

The Madison County Board of Review met in Edwardsville on Tuesday and organized. Members are John H. Lees of Lees Township George Liebler of Jarvis and W W Head of Fort Russell with Robert Curdie elected clerk. Mr Leef serves as chairman of both boards. The two appointees were named by County Judge J E Hillskotter. They do not expect to begin reviewing county tax assessments until the assessment lists are published.

Belleville Advocate Reports Stripping Process Trial

Assessor Van Schultzer finished the Jarvis township tax assessment last week and filed returns. The total full value is $2,227,700 with an assessed value of $775,901. In Troy the city personal property amounts to $244,011 and township $204,66. combined assessed value $149,557. Unimproved city lots total 173 valued at HLH, 492 improved at 8107,095. combined assessed $159,279. Township improved acres 19,240 valued at $4,20,600. unimproved 4 acres at 800465. Total lands in the township full value and assessed at $467,085.

New Evening Daily Is Out In East St. Louis

The Evening Sun, a new afternoon daily in East St. Louis, debuted Monday evening with a twenty four page edition. Editor in chief Sewell Mo Johnson of St. Louis addresses the paper as a local organ focused on fast city news while minimizing foreign or telegraph items. M L Young of St. Louis led the inaugural edition preparation but will not stay with the paper.

Organize Board of Review for Coal Operators

The annual meeting of the Coal Operators Association Fifth and Ninth districts was held Tuesday afternoon at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. Forty four members attended representing three mines with annual output over 12 million tons. Officers elected: Thomas T. Brewster president succeeding W Ropiequet, J E Rutledge vice president succeeding Brewster, Frank J Tirre secretary, J E Koch treasurer.
