Weather, Wit, and a Lino Mill in June Weave

Marine light plant burns in Marine destroying plant
A fire last Friday morning totally destroyed the Marine electric light plant along with the ice plant and packing house. Loss estimated at 18000 dollars with 6000 dollars insurance. Alfred Thurnau woke to light reflections and raised the alarm as townspeople fought the blaze. Fire damaged machinery and suspect incendiary origin is considered unlikely, with origin possibly in the engine room. Leese and Neal of St. Louis, former owners, had arranged a loan and planned to rebuild on a new site west of the old plant to resume service for Marine and St. Jacob, leaving both towns briefly dark.

Gavrilovich Stays Death Penalty To July 16
Nikola Gavrilovich, Madison wife murderer, gains a second reprieve from Gov. Dunne delaying execution until July 16 1910. Earlier stays planned for April 18 and June 18 failed as Illinois legislature did not abolish capital punishment this session. It appears unlikely another delay will occur after July 18, and Gavrilovich may face execution for the April 3 1910 stabbing. The Canady bill to end capital punishment was defeated 22 to 18. A separate note reports a Braner building movie show closing, Joseph Seltz operator John Newton returning to East St. Louis, and John Higgins improving after illness.
