Explosion on Rail Near Cuba Mine Kills Three
Three railroad workers died near Cuba mine after an explosion on No. 4 Engine of the St. Louis, Troy and Eastern line. Engineer Thomas Durell, fireman Richard Lewis, and brakeman Charles Murphy perished as debris and scalding steam scattered the crew. Surviving conductors Robb and Williams escaped as the boiler blew away, with the wreck-age reported hours after the blast. The tragedy occurred during switching near Donk Bros. No. 1 mine, leaving a community in mourning and authorities investigating the cause.

Memorial Day Observed in Troy by Veterans Group
Memorial Day was observed in Troy on Monday under the veterans. The mayor’s proclamation closed businesses at noon to honor the occasion. The parade formed at the public school, led by the U M W A band, and proceeded to the cemetery with veterans, sons of veterans, lodge members, and schoolchildren. A program followed featuring invocation, recitations, chorus, and flower distribution.
