National Road Rebuilt In One Day Plan Aired
The National Good Roads Association of Illinois based in Effingham proposes rebuilding the old National road from Terre Haute to East St. Louis, 175 miles, in a single day. They seek 1,000 teams and 5,000 men at 7 a.m. July 24 along the route with traction engines, scrapers, shovels, and other equipment under township highway commissioners. Public meetings and town-by-town organization are under way as motivations grow to make the project a model dirt highway and boost the ocean-to-ocean highway plan. Women along the route will provide lunch, and communities from Collineville to Greenville plan to participate.
