Preservation wins for Mounds amid interurban plan

Madison and St Clair counties pledge not to destroy the southern Madison county mound group for a proposed Springfiell & Central Illinois Traction interurban line. Company president Isaac A. Smith and chief engineer assure final survey will keep the line at least 399 feet away, with care to avoid mounds including Monk’s Mound. Protests by residents and groups such as the Monks of Cahokia spurred a public stand, then a banquet honoring Henry Clay in 1842 is oddly cited amid otherwise preservation-focused reports.
