Dark Continent Journal Excerpt Describes War Casualty and Wildlife
In a continuation from earlier pages, the author recounts a night attack, returning with a dead soldier and two cannibal prisoners. Burial honors are described, a French prayer by a lieutenant, English by the narrator, and a hope for a larger detachment to quell the palaver. The narrative notes white safety amid tribal feuds, and mentions hippo, crocodile, elephant, and buffalo sightings along with a leopard stealing goats.
