A fire gutted the north and central wings of Owatonna state school for indigent children on the night of the 25th. all inmates evacuated safely, including 19 babies. building losses not stated though $50,000 insurance covered.

Illinois report by Clerk Thomas Williams estimates over 300 saloons within East St. Louis limits for the next quarter with a saloon for each 142 residents. The “whisky chute” area has a saloon in every house on one block and about every other house for five blocks. Annual saloon revenue reached $150,000, about 26 percent more than anticipated general tax income.
Gov Yates accepts Gen John C Black of Chicago resignation from the Illinois Vicksburg military commission. Black says his new civil service post for the federal government makes it impossible to oversee duties on the military commission.
Allen Woodard a contracted carpenter was accidentally killed in Bloomington as Edward Maher a bartender fired two shots. George Kistner assaulted Maher with bricks during the incident. One bullet struck Kistner in the arm and the other killed Woodard as he passed by.
Henry Krone aged 68 born in Germany died suddenly in Virginia. A resident since 1840, he leaves a large estate to his wife and daughter Mrs Ed Brockman.
Joseph Wolver aged 14 and weighing 300 pounds died at his Barrington Center home following a coughing spell. Witnesses noted rapid growth from 100 pounds at age five to 210 pounds at age ten. Medical examiner cited the cough as the cause of death.
Major William J. Lawrie of Sterling was unanimously reelected senior major of the Sixth Regiment Illinois National Guard at a regimental election held at headquarters in Moline.
W K Honn was found guilty of wife murder in Coles county circuit court. Judge Thompson imposed an indeterminate prison term of five to 21 years. Prof Robert S Page, Freeport schools superintendent and regional education figure, died in Freeport from a paralytic stroke.
Solomon Mercer and L A Levick bought 520 acres between Blue Grass and Rossville for 68000 dollars from William McDonald.
Prophetstown town council set the contract for the waterworks system and work will commence at once, with the project awarded for immediate construction in the town.
A committee has been formed to raise 1200 dollars for sinking an oil well at Mulberry Grove. An Indiana firm has offered to perform the work for the stated sum.
George Lester, a civil war veteran, slashed his wife and daughter with a carving knife in East St. Louis. Their wounds are not serious. Lester was arrested.

Mrs Rohena Taylor aged 102 died at Lincoln Old Folks home in Springfield from infirmities of old age. She lived in Springfield and was remembered by local community members for her long life and quiet service.
Arthur J Love, a brakeman, was struck by a Wabash train at Jacksonville. He died an hour later at a local hospital after being transported there for treatment.
John Pacey a 73 year old native of Scotland and wealthy retired farmer died at St Paxton after a short illness.
The Allegheny Coal Co confirms that all men in the Harwick mine when the blast hit are dead. Officials list 171 names, with 174 known dead and others possibly unlisted, as coffins rise from the shaft and grieving townsfolk await more news. Two Polish widows arrive from Poland, one with an infant, unable to speak English.
In St Louis on a foggy Wednesday morning January 28 more than twenty injured with at least four seriously after two Broadway streetcars collided just south of Meramec street at 7 40 am. The front car was stationary as the second car approached at speed the motorman Christopher Juergin rang his gong and could not avoid the crash panic and a crush followed as passengers scrambled for exits and women and children were trampled amid wreckage.
