Springfield observers deem Albert J. Hopkins unable to win a Senate reelection after a Wednesday coup by his supporters. The balloting showed 89 votes then dropping to 84 as anti-Hopkins forces held, with a session adjournment until noon Thursday. Lieutenant Governor Sherman resigned before term end to handle a Peoria law case ahead of a new inauguration.

In Des Moines the first Iowa United States senator chosen without party caucus or nominating speech. A. B. Cummins, Republican, won the primary by the two houses in separate session. Democrats backed Claud Porter. A joint session Wednesday will finalize Cummins as senator.
Denver millionaire lawyer Charles G. Hughes Jr. won election by the Colorado General Assembly on Tuesday to succeed Senator Henry M. Teller. Hughes will take his seat in the United States Senate representing Colorado.
A fire at a Lake Michigan crib two miles offshore destroys the structure. Seventy-five men leap into the lake. fifteen drown and several suffer burns. Dynamite in the foundation endangers trapped workers below. Rescuers race to the scene as survivors are pulled from icy waters.
