Springfield poised for new state building near capitol
The Forty-ninth general assembly may approve about $500,000 to buy land adjacent to the capitol and begin a new state building as part of the Centennial Memorial. A report due February 18 will set land costs and Springfield contributions. The plan favors a three-block site south of the state house, with no action on a Chicago building. A bill to create a Chicago state building may be introduced to assume $373,000 yearly rentals. Governor Dunne aims to keep total appropriations low.

Largest South African Snakes Rival World Beasts
Temple Manning notes South Africa hosts the world’s largest snakes with a Swaziland python claim. A Johannesburg hunter and workers measured four captured snakes including a nearly twenty foot long specimen and a 34 inch girth, while a smaller eleven footer was twelve inches around. They photographed by tying heads to pegs and stretching tails back. The non venomous snakes constrict and defend themselves, never attacking people. The hunter earned fourteen gallons of oil from the catch, worth about fifteen pounds.
