Jamaica reports indicate Kingston killed about 1,000 persons and left 90,000 homeless after a devastating earthquake and fire. All ships and most buildings destroyed, warehouses collapse, and looting reported. Banks burned, provisions needed, stench described as awful, and long communications blackout.
A message from Sir Alfred Jones reports Kingston destroyed by an earthquake at 3 30 PM Monday. Public offices and hospitals ruined, fire following the quake. Killed include Sir James Fergusson, prominent merchants and many natives. business quarters reduced to ashes. several hundred dead per some cables.
Little Rock Arkansas Senator R R Adams was expelled from the senate and replaced by Governor appointed Col William Lambert. A senate committee was named to probe the governor's appointment power. Adams, during the trial of Senator P F Butt who was convicted of bribery, admitted taking a bribe.
Springfield dispatch reports both Republican and Democratic House leaders aim to push early work with rules established by speaker backed committees. Governor Deneen seeks 3590000 to fund a suit against Illinois Central Railroad over charter violations amid sweeping audits and claimed losses to the state including bridge tolls and misdistributed earnings.
The Illinois Central Railroad faces a state accounting suit in Springfield filed January 14 by Attorney General W. H. Stead. Gov. Deneen seeks $150,000 for the suit's expenses while claiming the state’s share from 1877 to present could total millions, with $4.8 million uncovered already and more likely to grow. President Harriman’s stance awaits court action. Jacob Dickinson for the railroad says Harahan will speak in court.

A blaze at Springfield Collieries Co. mine two and a half miles northeast of the city destroyed tipple screens elevators conveyors box car loaders and scales. Loss is about 39000 dollars. Fire department reported full containment after hours of effort.

Charleston John Locke known as king of railway thieves was arrested in Wisconsin and brought back to answer 19 burglary charges. Police say he led a gang involved in multiple robberies on major lines. Authorities emphasize swift trial and continued investigations into related cases.
Springfield reports that at the close of the current legislative session Speaker Shurtleff will return to Chicago to resume his law practice. The move follows his tenure guiding state business in the capital court and reflects a shift back to private work.
