Miss Julia Langer, 20, died in St Marie after pouring coal oil from a can onto kindling to light a fire. Live coals in the stove ignited the fluid, enveloping her clothing and burning her face and body beyond recognition before help arrived. The building was saved by heroic visitors in an adjoining room. Langer worked in the Catholic church and led local social circles.
