Big coal mine merger eyed for Midwest district

A revived plan to consolidate Madison, St Clair, Macoupin and Montgomery county mines into a single management group could reshape present mining conditions. Proponents say cost cuts and unified production would boost St Louis area coal use while independent mines outside the 50 mile core would keep prices in check. Negotiations cited by Halbrook-Wackwelder interests and comments from Lumaghi Coal Co. executives indicate the deal may proceed, though no final terms or date are set.
