In South Wilmington a riot erupted after a change of bartenders at a co operative saloon run by Italian and Bohemian miners. The old bartender resisted, was assaulted, and a new bartender fired a shotgun. A police officer and a bystander were wounded while Antonio, the new bartender, was wounded and captured. rioters were dispersed by police.
Because his two young daughters aged three and seven committed a minor offense, Whb Brann allegedly locked them in a coal shed and kept them there until the younger child’s feet were frozen. Neighbors found the children and Brann fled to avoid punishment.
Mrs Agnes Houser daughter of Chief Justice Ricks of the Illinois Supreme Court was granted a divorce from W S Houser a Taylorville dentist in Christian county circuit court. She won alimony and custody of her 12 year old son.
A fire swept Gillespie’s business section reducing structures to charred ruins. Loss is put at about 100,000 dollars with insurance around 650,000. Fire crews battled the blaze through the night, and investigators began reviewing the scene.
Acting under Gov. Deneen instructions, Adjt. Gen. Scott orders state troops withdrawn from Zeigler. Guard costs at the Leiter mine have averaged about $300 daily.
N. P. Perry aged 73 collapsed and died in a Bloomington drug store. He was a 28 year widower and childless. His estate is left to establish an art gallery for Bloomington.
Charles Robbins aged 75 died in Sparta from injuries after a fall on an ice covered sidewalk three weeks earlier. The remains were interred at Steeleville.
Mrs Lynicy Warren aged 170 was found dead in bed at her home in Upner Alton. Coroner Streeper held an inquest and found death due to heart disease.
Fire at the Mendon Cala Boose spread to the water works destroying the facility. Estimated loss about $7,000 with no insurance. Local authorities report firefighting efforts contained the blaze after initial spread. No injuries reported.
A farm accident near Bartelso ended in the death of John Betz when a threshing machine wheel crushed his head. He fell in front of the device and suffered fatal injuries immediately.
