Special reasons for our interest in more and better crops
A report outlines six factors on population growth, crop output, urbanization, grain quality, trade balance, and land values from 1900 to 1913. It notes rising farm land values, waning export shares, and shifting soil and farming practices near Tripoli Wisconsin as settlers consider virgin soil needs and fertilizers.

Fertilized plots yield more potatoes in Wisconsin test
In Tripoli Wis a small field trial compared two half acre plots with identical seed and care except for fertilizer. The fertilized plot produced 470 bushels per acre of excellent stock versus 390 bushels on the unfertilized plot. Digging results showed 235 bushels on the fertilized side with 216 marketable and 19 small, while the unfertilized produced 195 bushels with 165 marketable and 30 small.

Use of Fertilizers for Wheat in Missouri
Press bulletin No 22 from Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station Columbia quotes Prof M F Miller on rising fertilizer use for wheat in Missouri. He notes worn and high value land, prairie and timber soils, and recommends complete fertilizer with 2-3% nitrogen 8-12% phosphorus and 2-3% potash at 100-200 pounds per acre. Higher grade allows lower application rates.

Why European Soils Are Rich
In 1913 Breeders Gazette argues that Europe’s soil fertility is partly due to American exports of phosphate, cotton seed, and linseed. It credits European farmers for effective use of purchased inputs while urging domestic producers to feed oilcake locally and to seek protein sources in the south for the dairies.

State Machines Grow Stronger in Illinois Tax Power Debate
A fiscal piece warns that state government machines are expanding beyond civil service limits, increasing patronage and control over state institutions. It argues the proposed tax commission would give Illinois governors coercive power to remove and prosecute local tax officials, and cites Kansas as a cautionary example of tax shifts and rising land values after a permanent tax commission was enacted.

Soil Factors Limiting Crop Size and Quality
The text lists key soil limits on crops including weather, rainfall, air circulation, water holding capacity, soil bacteria, and available plant food. It argues farmers can modify four factors via tillage and fertilization, urging careful land study for profitability. It also includes 1888 affidavit text about Hall's Catarrh Cure and advertising pitches.
