Waterway power fight over Joliet dam site spurs state action
Illinois lawmakers face a clash between the Sanitary District of Chicago and the Economy Light and Power company over developing water power below Joliet. Chicago seeks authority to harness the Des Plaines river power via dam No 1 and dam No 2, potentially yielding about $61,000 yearly plus a three mile deep navigable waterway, while the private firm claims a prior lease and opposes the project amid public concern.
