National Road History Recalled by Paris Man
Asa Bber of Paris recalls the old National road from Washington to St Louis and its revival efforts. The road began in 1806, reached Richmond Indiana by 1826 after a $1,000,000 spend, and extended to Terre Haute Indiana. It crossed Illinois but the final leg to St Louis was never graded. The road reopened to public use in 1418 and prior to 1852 served as the nation’s principal highway. An 1800s government appropriation followed a Plainfield Indiana stagecoach overturn involving President Van Buren.
