Hammerstein, Opera Pioneer, retires after major sale
Oscar Hammerstein, longtime impresario behind the Manhattan Opera House and near firms tied to it, sold his grand opera interests to the Metropolitan Opera and allied groups for about 2.1 million dollars. Born in Berlin in 1847, he built a string of theaters including the Harlem Opera House, Manhattan Theatre, Victoria, and Republic, later turning the Olympia and New York and Criterion into ventures. He reported heavy losses after a booming early period, defended his artistic aims, and outlined plans for further productions before selling his holdings.
