McKendree College Keeps North America’s Oldest Bell

The oldest bell on the continent is believed to be at McKendree College in Lebanon and still in daily use. Cast in Guadaloupe Spain, it traveled with Abé Jesuits to New Mexico, spent over a century there, moved to St Louis, and was recovered by a Mortendree ally who returned it to the college. Recast in its current form, the bell blends silver and copper for a rich mellow tone.
