Illinois Deadlock Ends as Lewis Sherman Tie Is Broken

Springfield reports James Hamilton Lewis Democrat elected U S Senator for six year term starting March 4 1918 and Lawrence Sherman Republican chosen for the short term beginning March 4 1909 after the deadlock since February 11. The house and senate broke on ballots fourteenth and fifteenth in first state since 1818 with two senators elected simultaneously. Governor Dunne to push direct primary law for nomination of senators. Total party alignments and votes detailed. several absences and cross votes noted.
