Notable career of Thomas Benton in public life
To sketch the life and character of this remarkable man is a difficult task. Benton rose from modest schooling in North Carolina and Tennessee to become a prominent U S senator and key West advocate. He championed land policy, open overland routes, and western commerce, clashed with Calhoun, supported Jackson, and left a lasting imprint on Missouri and national politics. His late-life work included a major Thirty Years' View manuscript, dictating it as his health waned, and he died April 1, 1854 at age 76.
