Community notes from Troy show residents departing for Cincinnati and St Louis for lectures, stores advertising seeds corsets hosiery and fabrics, and a lengthy correspondence from local editor about county court finances, taxation, and a back-tax collection contract with attorneys.
Editors Herald notes an elderly man seeking relief after a court reduced back taxes in about forty cases under a late revenue law clause. He met Judges Trescott and Baskett and was urged to attend the adjourned term on April 84 to possibly compromise his case before judgment. Others with back taxes are urged to appear at that time for potential relief of remaining cases.
In St Louis County, the state auditor holds that attorneys fees cannot be collected as costs until back taxes are actually pursued in court. Delinquent taxes paid without suit avoid attorney fees, aligning with the Republican stance. Creditors urged payment within 60 days. failure will push notes and accounts to collection officers.
Murphy and surrounding communities report spirited temperance sessions on the 6th and 19th with speeches music and recitations. Frank A Cake Jr and Miss Bulivia A Light drew praise while a pledge drive at New Hope and Elm Grove expanded membership with over two hundred taking the pledge and many signing.
Woolfolk and Hand announce new spring goods at their store. The issue reports a school at Cornick’s school house closing on the Internet with Mr. Win Broyles praised for three sessions. An entertaining close with speeches, a fine dinner, and a temperance feature by Rev. Foster. Broyles’ teaching lauded by district and pupils. Also notes new goods at Wuovuroue and lanp's and a fatal accident near Lincoln County involving Bimon Withous. Includes sale of home power engine and saw mill components through D M Anderson & Co. Owing to general low mood in business and poor collections for two years we will close out our entire stock and demand immediate payment on all debts.
