Whelton Justifies Back Tax Action in Missouri Case
In Troy Missouri on March 4 1878 editora herald records Whelton explaining his use of Norton Martin and Dryden as attorneys to collect back taxes and take up to ten percent commission. He notes 91870 00 back tax amount placed in July 1677 and reports about 67054 00 collected for the treasury with remaining disputes mostly due to unknown owners. He cites other counties approving ten percent fees and says the court approved his contract, adding he acted in the countys best interest despite harsh back tax laws. He asserts he will continue to collect and pursue owners with attorney support. Messrs John Jim and Reapino Wilson buy Warren Mitchell farm from Uae Prewitt.
