Senator Morton, Grant, and the 1875 political clash
The Troy Herald reports on Senator Morton as a presidential candidate opposing Grant's third term, attacks on Attorney-General Williams' independence, and a broad critique of Republican leadership. It notes Supreme Court cases on income taxes from railroads, praises Carl Schurz, and discusses reforms for state government including biennial sessions and a governor's four-year term. It warns of the Democratic principles versus Republican overreach and calls for smarter local governance.
