Dale Shires reports strong feeder cattle demand despite a slight rise in supply this fall. Extension economist Gene Futrell of Iowa State University cites large feed grain stockpiles, ample feedlot capacity in the Cornbelt, cheaper corn and feeds, and a firm fed cattle market as key drivers.
Mr. Maxon argues recent contaminants steal attention while the FDA ranks hazards by health impact. Microbiological contamination and malnutrition top the list, followed by environmental contaminants like lead and mercury, then natural toxins, pesticides, and food additives.
Futrell notes a modest rise in feeder cattle numbers driven by a 3 percent calf crop increase. Calf slaughter declines boost feed supplies while yearling cattle grow only slightly. With strong demand, feeder prices are up from last fall and corn costs down about 30 cents per bushel, supporting favorable feeding returns in 1972.
