Tripoli merchants promote a Thanksgiving drawing offering twenty turkeys on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Warner Corner. Shoppers must register at participating businesses to win. signed tickets go into a master barrel and winners must be present to claim prizes.
Elmer Bockhaus 67 of Frederika died after a heart attack led to a crash when his truck overturned Thursday afternoon southwest of Tripoli. Services were at St. John’s Lutheran, Frederika, with Richard F. Gronewald officiating. Casket bearers included Law Bockhaus and Stanley Bock, among others. He was born September 17, son of August and Ise Bergmann Bockhaus, a member of St. John’s, with wife Ine and two children Becky and Brian surviving along with three sisters and two brothers.
Highway Patrol license exams are set for Saturday in the hall. Written and driving tests will be given until 11. The examining team will not return to Tripoli until December.
A two car and tractor crash occurred Saturday on the Tripoli Frederika road. Alfred Specht, riding a tractor, was struck from behind by Harold Meyer. Meyers and passengers were injured and taken to Allen Memorial hospital, as was Wittenburg’s family. Jerry Meyer, 5, sustained head cuts and bruises and remained hospitalized.
A group rummage sale is set for Saturday November 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Marlowe Breck residence located 227 Fourth Avenue SE. The listing notes items can be viewed beforehand.
Marsh Market releases new operating hours starting November 15 until Christmas. Weekdays open in late morning and close in early evening. Saturdays extend to 7 30 p.m. Sundays not listed.
Sidney, son of Mr and Mrs Lavern Tegtmeier, was admitted to Allen hospital on Monday for an ankle injury.
Funeral services for Helena Schneider 70 were held Monday at St Matthew s Lutheran near Readlyn. She died Friday at Mercy hospital Waverly after a week’s illness. Burial followed at the church cemetery with Rev John Albrecht officiating. Casketbearers were Emil Schneider Herbert Schneider Henry Oltrogge Ewald Kleiss Vernon Poock and Henry Thies. She was born March 26 1901 to Conrad and Sophia Oltrogge and survived by husband Elmer six children Mrs Arthur Schlichting Mrs Lyle Goeller Mrs Robert Bast Arnold Harvey and Robert Schneider.
Navy Fireman Apprentice Gregory L Lahmann son of Mrs Mildred M Lahmann of 518 S Main St Tripoli Iowa returns to homeport Alameda California after a seven month deployment to the Western Pacific aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Midway.
Tripoli Community Chest campaign closes after surpassing the $2,160 goal. Chairman Karl Asmus reports $2,222.15 is on deposit. He thanks workers, captains, and donors for their generous 1971 fund drive contributions.
Tripoli Music Mothers present a rootin tootin Hillbilly weddin for two days November 19 and 20 at the Tripoli High gym. Cast features local talent to raise funds for new band uniforms and entertainment. Craft and Arts and Crafts group meets at The Market Monday November 22 to plan upcoming sales.
Richard Buhr was elected president of the Tripoli Commercial Club at a Monday night dinner meeting in the town hall to succeed retiring president Robert Sassman. John Schnieders became vice president and Gerald Klosterman and Dale Krueger won three-year director terms. The club approved a Bremer County Extension donation for the 4-H Chicago trip and a Christmas Seal Bond purchase. New decoration dates were set for November 26 and the club will not buy evergreen roping for resale.
The Bremer County ASC details three options for the 1972 Feed Grain Program announced October 18 by Secretary Hardin. Farmers must sign up Jan 17 to Feb 25 to set aside 25 percent minimum and may add up to 10 percent more for corn and grain sorghum or 20 percent more for barley, with specific per bushel payments and later mid March announcements for additional offers. Early set aside payments will begin after July 1, 1972.
Tripoli finished third in the conference with a 5 2 record behind Turkey Valley and South Winneshiek. The team scored 219 points while allowing 92. Dan Boeckmann led rushers with 921 yards on 191 carries and shared 50 points with Gaylen Drape and John Fink. Kent Harris won defensive MVP with Dan Boeckmann as offensive MVP.
Winter sports at Tripoli High School open Tuesday November 23 with varsity basketball non conference games at Greene and wrestling at home against Hudson. The Pantherettes hope for a strong season under coach Dave Van Ahn with twenty three players and four seniors in the roster. The boys squad led by coach Dave Ray features several likely starters amid a larger group competing for two spots. Wrestling coach John Samuelson leads thirty five athletes with eight returning lettermen as the season begins.
John Wayne Bumgarner infant son of Donald and Janice Bumgarner was born and died in Fort Worth Texas on November 5. Graveside services were held November 8 at Laurel Land cemetery in Fort Worth. Survivors include his parents maternal grandparents Elmer and Sonia Brase paternal grandmother Mildred Bumgarner and great grandmothers Laura Brase and Pauline Block.
Tripoli post office will close Thursday November 25 for Thanksgiving with no window service or rural delivery though the incoming star route stays open and an evening mail dispatch remains. American Savings Bank and Bremer county banks will close. Local businesses also shutter for the holiday November 25.
The Waverly Senior Citizens will travel by bus to Minneapolis December 4 to 6 leaving Mitchell Manor at 8:00 a.m. December 4. The $33 fee covers transportation two hotel nights Cinerama Saturday Swedish Museum Sunday and a Christmas lights city tour. Call 352-2463 to reserve by November 20.
Karl Krumm, UNI linebacker, earned the Oil Can award at the UNI football banquet on November 10 in the Commons ballroom. Defense coordinator Dennis Remmert presented the coveted prize for outstanding contribution to the football squad’s smooth operation. Krumm, a Tripoli High School alum, shifted from offense to defense in his junior year and became a key defender for the Panthers.
The Jaycee sponsored event served 275 persons Saturday morning. Prize winners include Mike Gaede of Minneapolis for shotgun, Melvin Klenzman of Waterloo for rifle, Don Bremer for radio, and Leon Kleiss of Humboldt for a blender.
The Bremer County TBRD Association mailed the first sheets of Christmas Seals to Tripoli residents this week. With designs featuring an angel a candle a toy soldier and a Christmas Tree the seals are part of a long standing holiday tradition used to decorate cards and packages. The 1950s era slogan There’s More To Do Give More To Christmas Seals It’s A Matter of Life and Breath underscores the campaign focus.
