The 8 to 15 year old summer baseball program opens with registration on Tuesday June 4 from 1 to 4 PM at South Park Shelter. Boys must be 8 by June 1 and not yet 15. Practices begin June 5 with 8-12 year olds at 1 PM and 13-15 year olds at 2:30 PM. Parents should register players with coach Eldon Ott on June 4.
Tripoli post office observes Memorial Day on Thursday May 30 with no window service or rural delivery. The morning star route operates and incoming mail is delivered to boxes. no outgoing mail. Most Tripoli businesses close for the observance.
The Tripoli Senior Citizens group will hold a June 5 gathering with a 6:00 PM potluck supper. A short program will precede a cards session for members.
A community swimming program for Frederika area children will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays for six weeks in July. Registration closes June 15 with a 50 cent fee plus a 10 cent per session optional ad fee. Transportation divides riders by east and west areas with two sessions from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. at local schools.
Diaz a 1958 high school graduate is a new patrolman for the Police Department. He is married with daughters aged 3, 5 and 7 and has lived in Elk Horn most of his life. He served six months in the Army Military Police and Reserve. he enjoys woodworking and is from Tripoli with parents Mr and Mrs Sommer.
The financial aids office lists recipients including Sophomore Uchholz Regents Merit, Junior Susan Loh Nor Class Scholarship, Ila Zaner Rural Wa hi Scholarship, and Jane Nacke Rural i Scholarship. Each student is awarded about 26 000 dollars in aid for the academic year 1968 69.
A voluntary safety check in Tripoli Saturday examined 211 vehicles before rain halted the effort after noon. The tally showed 203 autos and nine trucks. 11 autos had faulty equipment, 10 were rechecked and passed. Faults included lights signals and exhaust. 117 belts found, 86 without belts.
Wartburg College held commencement in Waverly with 267 seniors, including 50 slated to complete summer requirements. Degree recipients include Mark Buls and Eileen Sievers, Tripoli. Paul Homan, Waverly. Bruce Rieckenberg, Waverly. Bernice Platte Ludwig, Tripoli.
Joel J. Wikner of New Hampton has been promoted to Army Specialist 4 while serving in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division. A 1965 Denver High School graduate, he enlisted in 1966 and trained at Fort Hood. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Wikner of Tripoli.
Dr W B Weeber will be out of town June 7 to June 23 and the office will be closed during this period. Please make adequate drug arrangements before June 6.
Sgt. and Mrs. Jerry Martin and family reached California from Santa Ana and are guests of Mrs. Edna Kuethe. After a three weeks leave Sgt. Martin will report for overseas duty while Mrs. Martin stays with her mother.
Genial Gem and Aurora Boy Joe won the half mile and quarter mile races respectively at Hank Mur Downs in Coats Minnesota. Lester Gaede owned the horses Milton Gaede trained Genial Gem took first, Aurora Boy Joe placed first with jockey Floyd Billington of Waterloo.
The Jaycee Wives of Tripoli plan a Monday gathering June 3 at 7 30 p m at the home of Mrs Robert Meyer.
Seventy five students are expected to attend a six week remedial reading and math program at Tripoli Community School from June 10 to July 19. Howard Marquart supervised by Hilbert Mixdorf, with seven local teachers hired. Title I funds of 28468 dollars cover salaries and instructional supplies.
Denver special report notes Herman H Thoms of Readlyn aged 83 died at home. Born September 3 1884 in Jefferson township he married Minnie Otto in 1908. Retired farmer, survived by Minnie two daughters Lucinda Heinemann Erna Heinemann a foster son Fred Cox 12 grandchildren 31 great grandchildren. Preceded by son Raymond and one grandchild. Funerals May 27 at St Pauls Lutheran Readlyn with burial in church cemetery.
Funeral services for Bernhardt C. Volker age 67 were held Wednesday morning at Nazareth Lutheran Church Cedar Falls with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. He died Monday at Sartori Memorial Hospital.
Denver and the Denver Lions Club will again run the 1968 PeeWee baseball league and the junior girls softball league as part of the summer recreation program. A girls softball organizational meeting is set for 6:00 p.m. June 4 at the softball diamond, with signups for grades 5 through 8. All games start at 6:00 p.m. Tuesdays. four softball teams are set. PeeWee Baseball players must attend the first meeting. the first game is June 6. Rosters coaches and rules will be distributed at the meetings.
Dalton Meyer 55 Bremer County Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Committee chairman died Sunday in Waterloo after cancer. Funeral rites were held Wednesday at St John’s Lutheran Spring Fountain with burial in Sumner township Lutheran cemetery. Survived by widow Ruby three sons Robert Sumner Ronald Britt Merlin at home two daughters Lyle Kammeyer Cabot Ark Marlow Hoth Killeen Tex two brothers Earl Leo Sumner three sisters Mrs John Struck Mrs Arnold Gitch Sumner and Mrs Harold Oltrogge Westgate.
The 16th annual convention will be held June 8 and 9 at Hotel Blackhawk Davenport. Pattison says more than 400 delegates from Iowa's 99 counties expected. Theme is The Retarded, Their Needs at Every Age. Registration begins Friday evening with the board meeting at 8 p.m. and continues Saturday. Members and the public are invited.
Tripoli high school opened summer baseball with a 10 0 win over Dunkerton as Tom Green struck out nine. Biesterfelt added two RBI with a bases loaded single and relieved in the sixth. Schedule includes six opponent dates through July 8 with 6 30 p m starts. Tripoli girls softball fell 8 4 to Nashua in opener with Glenda Matthias and Sue Pleggenkuhle each 3 for 4.
The Tripoli Town Council ordered supervision of the municipally owned dump and restricted use to Mondays Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The change starts June 5 with permits for residents granting free use, while nonresidents pay a fee based on load size. Identification stickers for residents will be provided free, to be displayed on rear-view mirrors. Residents must apply at Town Hall June 3 and 4, bringing license details for a permanent applicant log.
Eldon Ott of Tripoli high school received the coach of the year award at Wartburg College honors recognition. Ott, a 1964 Wartburg graduate, has coached at Tripoli since that time.
Mrs. John Munsterman of Waverly was selected homemaker of the year by the Extension home economics committee and former homemakers of the year. She and her husband retired on their farm and remain active in civic, religious, and neighborly life with two daughters in Waterloo and Harbor City California.
The Northeast Iowa basebal league forms eight teams with the Tripoli Red Sox opening Sunday June 2 at Fredericksburg. Western division includes Tripoli Fredericksburg Elma New Hampton while eastern division features Postville Decorah Spillville Ft Atkinson.
A Social Security Administration representative will visit Waterloo on June 3 and 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Court House, in Sumner on June 18 from 9 to 11 a.m. at City Hall. Those unable to attend may call the Waterloo district office at 525 West 5th Street.
Music Mothers host an ice cream social following the first band concert on Wednesday evening June 5 at 8 p m in South Park. Ice cream pie cake coffee and Kool Aid will be served.
